Understanding what data the systems we use contain, and knowing what all of our systems are, is integral to keeping our data secure.

To help manage our assets, we need to know things like:

• What they are;
• Where they are;
• Who is responsible for them; etc.

We might also need to carry out some checks on companies before working with them, to ensure that any data they process for us is kept secure.
